Addition is an operation in which one number is added to another number. When adding a series of numbers, there are some strategies that help simplify the addition process. One thing to remember is to group numbers to make tens. For example, when adding 2 + 7 + 8, you can add the 2 and the eight first to get ten, and then add the seven to get 17. Some teachers call these groups of numbers that add to ten, "friendly tens," since they make adding easier for the student.
Get some addition practice while reading picture books together. There are a ton of great picture books that have overt and hidden addition facts and practice, but you can turn any book into a lesson in addition. If you read a page with a picture of a forest, you might say to your child, "I see three trees and four flowers. How many plants are there all together?" You can add characters, shapes, items, or anything in multiples.
For practicing some math skills like simple addition, there is just nothing more effective than a pencil and paper. These math worksheets start with simple addition (one-digit) math facts and progress to adding 2-digit numbers in columns. No regrouping is included in out grade 1 exercises.
